Rupert McEvoy

Rupert McEvoy paints textured figurative works depicting humans interacting with one another or with objects within constructed environments. His practice explores tension through the juxtaposition of inviting palettes and the dense emotional complexities held within the figure.

McEvoy’s process involves applying layers of pigment mixed with ground pumice stone, then sanding back into the surface over an extended period. This process builds a history of marks, creating depth and inviting the viewer further into the work.
Rather than working from a predetermined outcome, McEvoy allows each composition to develop organically, responding intuitively to every mark as it is made. The resulting surfaces hold traces of this process, revealing and concealing imagery in equal measure.

The works offer the viewer a space for introspection—a moment to encounter oneself within the figures and to consider the emotional tensions that exist between the internal and external worlds.
