Julia Roche
Julia Roche completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts at Sydney College of the Arts in 2008. She grew up, and now lives, on Wiradjuri Country at Wooroola, her family’s property near Mangoplah in regional New South Wales. Living and working on the land, Roche and her family are continually learning from and respecting the changing rhythms of the ecosystem and the enduring power of nature.
Immersed in the landscape and exposed to its elements, Roche’s practice explores the relationship between perception, memory and place. Working intuitively through layered surfaces and gestural mark-making, her paintings move between observation and abstraction, becoming transfigurations of both the seen and the sensed. Rather than depicting the landscape, Roche seeks to evoke the experience of being within it, inviting a slower, more sustained engagement with the natural world while marking a particular moment in time.
Julia Roche is represented by Defiance Gallery, Paddington Sydney.
